RPM and CPM

RPM and CPM are the two revenue metrics creators confuse most. CPM (cost per mille) is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s cut. RPM (revenue per mille) is what the creator actually takes home per 1,000 video views, after YouTube’s cut and across all revenue sources. RPM is the number that matters for a creator because it reflects real earnings; CPM is an advertiser side input. See Revenue Streams and YouTube Partner Program.

Definitions

  • CPM = advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, pre split. Only ad supported views count.
  • RPM = total revenue divided by total views, times 1,000. It blends ads, memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks, Shopping, and YouTube Premium, after YouTube’s share.
  • RPM is almost always lower than CPM because not every view shows an ad and because RPM is post split.

RPM by niche

RPM varies sharply by topic because advertiser demand varies:

  • Finance and investing roughly 4 to 12 dollars.
  • Business and marketing roughly 4 to 9 dollars.
  • Technology roughly 4 to 10 dollars.
  • Health and fitness roughly 2 to 5 dollars.
  • Gaming roughly 2 to 4 dollars.
  • Entertainment roughly 1 to 2 dollars.
  • Shorts roughly 0.01 to 0.10 dollars (the band varies by source); see Shorts Monetization.

What drives RPM up

  • Audience geography: US, UK, and similar markets command higher CPMs.
  • Video length: 8 minutes or more unlocks Mid-Roll Ads, adding ad slots.
  • Niche: high intent commercial topics attract higher bids.
  • Diversification: memberships and Shopping lift RPM beyond ads alone; see Revenue Streams.
  • Suitability: green rated content under the Advertiser-Friendly Guidelines earns full ad revenue.

How to apply

  • Read RPM in the Revenue tab of Studio Analytics, and compare it across your own videos, not against strangers.
  • If RPM is low, check geography, length, and suitability before blaming the niche.
  • Lengthen high value videos past 8 minutes where the content earns it, never with filler.
