Shorts

Shorts are YouTube’s short form vertical videos, served in a dedicated feed that runs its own recommendation model. The Shorts feed weights the swipe versus watch decision in the first 1 to 3 seconds, replays and loops, and shares, and it weights metadata less than long form. For most creators Shorts are a discovery engine: cheap to produce, high in reach, low in revenue per view, and best used to feed the long form catalog. Two changes that reshaped Shorts

  • Length: since 2024-10-15, standard channels can upload Shorts up to 3 minutes; anything square or vertical up to 3 minutes is categorized as a Short, while 16:9 stays long form. Most music is usable for up to 90 seconds in a 3 minute Short.
  • View counting: since 2025-03-31, a Shorts view counts on every play or replay with no minimum watch time, aligning with TikTok and Reels. The older sustained metric is renamed engaged views and still governs monetization and YouTube Partner Program eligibility.

Retention is the swipe decision

On the Shorts feed, the decisive metric is “Viewed vs swiped away,” the percentage of times viewers watched rather than scrolled past. The first second is the entire hook. Loops reward a clean cut from the end back to the beginning, which can push average percentage viewed above a single play. Target a high APV, often 60 percent or more. See Audience Retention and Watch Time and AVD.

Strengths and limits

  • Strength: reach. Shorts surface to new viewers fast and can grow subscribers quickly.
  • Limit: revenue. Shorts RPM is far below long form; see Shorts Monetization.
  • Limit: loyalty. A Shorts view is shallow; converting it to a long form view or subscription is the real win. See Shorts-to-Long-Form Funnel.

How to apply

  • Lead with a 1 second hook; assume the viewer decides instantly.
  • Design for the loop; make the end flow back into the start.
  • Use Shorts to trail a long form video, with a pinned comment or a specific verbal call to action.
  • Do not expect Shorts to pay like long form; treat them as top of funnel discovery feeding Publishing Cadence.
