Ad Campaign Types

A campaign type is the wrapper that decides which Ad Formats run, how they are bought, and what they optimize for. The 2026 lineup is shaped by one big migration: Demand Gen absorbed both Discovery campaigns and Video Action Campaigns, so the old action-focused video campaign no longer exists. Knowing the current set prevents building a strategy on a deprecated campaign. Because these names and migrations change, re-verify before advising; see Source Intake and Refresh.

Demand Gen

Demand Gen is the performance and demand-creation campaign. It runs across YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps, and the Display Network, with channel-level placement control, and supports image, video, carousel (2 to 10 cards), and product-feed assets. It bids on Maximize Conversions, Target CPA, Maximize Conversion Value, Target ROAS, and Maximize Clicks; see Ad Bidding and Budget.

The migration timeline: new Video Action Campaigns could no longer be created from around March or April 2025, automatic upgrades to Demand Gen began July 2025, end-date extensions past 2026-01-31 were blocked in December 2025, and final auto-upgrades completed by April 2026. Shared budgets, frequency caps, and lead forms did not transfer, but historical performance was preserved to minimize relearning. Google reported advertisers uploading both video and image assets saw 20 percent more conversions at the same CPA versus video-only.

Video reach campaigns

Built for awareness, with three subtypes:

  • Efficient reach: bumper plus skippable in-stream, optionally in-feed and Shorts, to lower cost per unique user.
  • Non-skippable reach: 15-second, 30-second connected-TV, or a 6+15-second mix, to deliver the full message.
  • Target frequency: reach the same people a set number of times, with multi-format targets of 2 to 7 weekly or 4 to 12 monthly. It is an average target, not a cap.

Video views campaigns

Video views campaigns (VVC) drive consideration through multi-format ads that combine skippable in-stream, in-feed, and Shorts in one ad group, bidding on Target CPV. Google reports multi-format can deliver up to 40 percent more views for the budget. See Ad Bidding and Budget and Ad Measurement.

How to apply

  • For conversions and demand, use Demand Gen, not a legacy video action campaign.
  • For awareness, choose a video reach subtype by whether you optimize for cost, message completion, or frequency.
  • For cheap views and consideration, use VVC with multi-format.
  • Re-check campaign availability before planning; the lineup is mid-migration. See Connected TV and Shorts Ads.
