Ad Measurement
Measurement is how an advertiser separates what they paid for from what actually happened, and the key distinction is between a paid view and a downstream outcome. Confusing the two leads to claiming credit a campaign did not earn. This note covers the metrics; the bid models that produce them are in Ad Bidding and Budget. The organic, creator-side analytics live in Studio Analytics.
Paid versus earned versus view-through
- TrueView views are the paid views you are billed for.
- View-through conversions (VTC) happen when a user is served an impression that is not counted as a view or click, then later converts on the site.
- Earned actions (earned views, likes, subscribers, playlist adds, shares) are unpaid signals tracked within 7 days of the initial view, the advertising echo of organic Community and Engagement.
Awareness metrics
For awareness campaigns, Google Ads reports Unique Reach and Average Impression Frequency, quantifying how many distinct people saw the ad and how often. These pair with the Target frequency controls in Ad Bidding and Budget.
Lift studies
Brand Lift, Search Lift, and Conversion Lift run on the same campaign for full-funnel measurement. Advertisers select brand metrics such as ad recall, awareness, consideration, favorability, and purchase intent, with accelerated flights delivering perception metrics sooner and the ability to re-measure over time. Demand Gen’s case for adding image assets, 20 percent more conversions at the same CPA, is the kind of result these studies surface; see Ad Campaign Types.
Connecting to conversions
Conversion tracking and Google Ads reporting tie ad exposure to actions on the advertiser’s site or app, while YouTube Analytics in Studio provides organic context. Reach and frequency reporting quantifies unique audience and exposure for the brand formats in Connected TV and Shorts Ads.
How to apply
- Decide the objective first, then the metric: views for consideration, conversions or VTC for performance, lift for brand.
- Do not read TrueView views as outcomes; pair them with earned actions and conversions.
- Run a lift study for any meaningful brand budget, and re-measure rather than trusting a single flight.
